Selenium*** – a nutrient that the body needs to stay healthy. Selenium is important for reproduction, thyroid gland function, DNA production, and protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals and from infection. The Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Trial (NPC) was a randomized, placebo-controlled study designed to test the hypothesis that higher selenium levels were associated with lower incidence of skin cancer. The results indicated that selenium supplementation did not affect risk of skin cancer, although incidences of lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer were significantly reduced. [1]
Pomegranate Fruit Powder** – A 2012 clinical trial of about 100 dialysis patients suggested that pomegranate juice may help ward off infections. In the study, the patients who were given pomegranate juice three times a week for a year had fewer hospitalizations for infections and fewer signs of inflammation, compared with patients who got the placebo.
Green Tea Leaf Powder** – limited evidence currently available suggests that both green and black tea might have beneficial effects on some heart disease risk factors, including blood pressure and cholesterol.
Broccoli Head Powder – According to the “Journal of Food and Agricultural Science”, colon and prostate health may improve with broccoli powder supplementation. In the study, liver and colon, two important organs of detoxification and elimination, responded well to broccoli powder-supplemented diets for seven days in laboratory animals, showing increased activity of antioxidants and enzymes involved in detoxification. Additionally, levels of prostate antioxidant activity increased. The study was conducted at the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Pygeum Bark Powder** – The NIH reports that there are current studies to determine if pygeum africanum is a worthwhile alternative for the treatment of men with symptomatic BPH.
Japanese Knotweed Root Extract – Japanese knotweed is an excellent source of resveratrol, the compound found in grapes. Japanese knotweed contains higher concentrations of trans-resveratrol, the active form of the compound most useful to the body.
Echinacea Purpurea Root Powder – Echinacea is used as a dietary supplement for the common cold and other infections, based on the idea that it might stimulate the immune system to more effectively fight infection.
Turmeric Root Powder** – Great overall anti-inflammatory. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) has studied curcumin for Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and prostate and colon cancer.
Lycopene*** – inhibits androgen receptor expression in prostate cancer cells in vitro and, along with some of its metabolites, reduces prostate cancer cell proliferation and may modulate cell-cycleprogression.
